Richard Kerr has two Rosso Red Cloverleaf 164's comprising of a 12-valve Cloverleaf from 1990 on an H plate and a later 24-valve Cloverleaf from 1994 on an M plate (luckily with Recaro seats) both of which I really enjoy driving, I think they are still magical cars which look great on the road and provide a very enjoyable ownership experience. They are now such a rare every day site on Britain's road which is a pity but, there still exists a small group of owner enthusiasts who are understandably passionate about these fine cars.
My interest in 164's began in 1994 when I was travelling as a sales rep. I often used to see 164's advancing at speed on my daily journey around the M25 coming up fast in the rear view mirror of my blah boring rep's car and I thought they really did look way ahead of their competition in those days (and today for that matter). I knew I had to have one. About this time a work colleague of mine acquired out of the blue a green Twin Spark Lusso. That same week he offered me a test drive and I was frankly completely smitten. That same weekend I was out seeking out used 164's. About this time Quentin Wilson from Top Gear had sensibly remarked what a fabulous car the 164 was so all of a sudden all the tidy looking ones got snapped up virtually overnight. Undeterred though, on the 17th June 1995 I acquired J56 LKM my first and very own red Twin Spark Lusso which I kept between June 1995 and part exchanged against a 166 in February 2008 having covered circa 100,000 faultless miles with a total of some 167,000. As you would expect from a 164, in 13 years that car never let me down. If anyone reading this knows the whereabouts of J56 LKM today (with luck still on the road) I would be interested to hear from them?
Once these cars get under your skin the effects can be long lasting.
Bound to be some more owner experience stories coming here soon!
